War Moves Through Networks: War and Social Network Analysis
For a long time, conflict and war have been analyzed through a linear and binary lens. Traditional frameworks such as state vs. state, government forces vs. rebels, or terrorists vs. counterterrorism units have been useful for explaining clear causes and outcomes. However, they are limited in capturing the complexity of modern warfare.
Contemporary conflicts are no longer just physical confrontations between two actors. They are shaped by interdependencies among ideology, capital, information, and a wide range of nonstate actors, all interacting within complex systems.
Social Network Analysis (SNA) offers a new perspective for the study of international politics and conflict. Network theory provides a way to examine the geometric structure of relationships that shape the emergence, spread, and resolution of conflicts. SNA helps reveal how invisible networks among actors constrain strategic decisions and ultimately reshape the dynamics of the battlefield. It functions not only as a theoretical framework but also as a tool for measurement and inference.
This article introduces several research cases that show how networks help explain the macro and micro dynamics of real conflicts. These include the U.S. military’s tactical use of SNA in the capture of Saddam Hussein, the hidden tensions between capital and security within global arms trade networks, shifting alliances and betrayals in the Syrian civil war, the dynamic spillover effects of conflict in Nigeria, and the cyber cognitive warfare unfolding on social media during the Russia–Ukraine war. Through these cases, we explore how network science provides new interpretations of war in extreme situations.
